Tarantulas belong to the arachnid family. They live all over the world, but the biggest tarantula ever recorded, the Goliath Bird Eater, lives in South America.
Lots of different types of tarantulas eat many types of things but I'll just give you a list of everything that they all eat combined. Crickets, baby mice, baby birds, mealworms, flightless fruit flies, and just about any other type of insect exept poisonous ones. That was the entire list but I'll tell you what size of tarantula goes to what food. Small tarantulas would eat, pinhead crickets, and flightless fruit flies. The flightless fruit flies might be hard to deal with, so just pinhead crickets are necessary. A pinhead is just a baby cricket that you can find at you local pet store if you ask. (Small tarantulas just means baby tarantulas.) Medium tarantulas eat crickets, mealworms, and just about any other invertebrates. (In the wild) Like I said for the small tarantulas, just stick to crickets, and only get mealworms as a treat every now-and-then. The bigger tarantulas eat baby mice, and baby birds. (Sometimes) (Large tarantulas will mostly eat crickets, but if they find a rare prize like a defenseless baby bird or mouse, then they will take that.) Like I keep saying, just keep to a cricket diet, and everything wil be fine.
The truth is that only certain types of tarantulas are aggressive. Most are docile which means very calm and gentle such as the rose hair, red knee, Choco Golden Knee, or the desert blond, tarantulas. There are a lot more tarantulas that are gentle, but I can't take all day. I myself have a Choco Golden Knee and a Venezuelan Sun Tiger tarantula and both are very gentle. Some aggressive tarantulas include the Cobalt Blue, Togo Starburst, and the King Baboon. Aggressive tarantulas are most often brightly colored and classified as ornamentals. Ornamentals are very delicate and are only for tarantula experts.
Tarantulas are very easy to take care of because all they need is some dirt or substrate, a few decorations such as fake plants, if you want, and a hiding place such as a log, or sometimes they will dig their own burrow. (If they dig their own burrow, be sure to cover it to give them shade.) They also need a half heat, half regular light that can serve both purposes. From medium to large tarantulas, I suggest nothing over 40 watts. For babies, I think there are some aquarium lights that might work. (You're going to need a weak wattage so you don't cook your baby tarantula. You must also have a shallow water dish because you don't want the tarantula's food to drown.(Crickets breathe through their abdomens and are stupid enough to drown themselves.) It is very important that you have a thermometer and hygrometer. Different types of tarantulas like certain temperature and humidity. These are important if the tarantula is going to molt. (Grow bigger.) Tarantulas can go up to two months without food. The record is two years, but the very least you should feed them is once a month. My brother and I feed ours once a week and their abdomens are the perfect size. You should play with them at least once a week depending on if the tarantula is aggressive or not. If the tarantula is aggressive do not play with it. (It is important that your tarantula gets exercise every now-and-then.) All in all, most of them are gentle and shy and will most certainly not bite at the first notice like the movies. (Except for the aggressive tarantulas I mentioned and a few more.) They are not poisonous, and the worst reaction that ever occurred was a numbness in the place of the bite. Tarantulas are the cutest things! A tarantula's abdomen on the underside is softer than velvet. I promise! Click here for a website that sells tarantulas. You can find some good info about tarantulas by Clicking Here. You can visit one of my favorite pictures Here. You can also visit my brother's website about all the cool tarantulas and other exotic pets that he has Here. By the way, the pictures at the top of this site are not mine. I don't know how to download pictures from a camera to my computer, so I had to grab some from the Internet. I do not claim that the pictures are mine, I only wanted people to know what the species of the tarantulas that I own will look like as adults. I do not mean to offend anyone.
